A field experiment was conducted in the semi arid tropics to study the effects of soil structural modification on cropping systems. The aim was to improve crop production and land resource protection using innovative soil management practices.

Tillage, mulch and perennial/annual rotational based systems were compared for 5 years in an Alfisol at ICRISAT in India. The study deals with farming systems which combine irrigation and rainfed agriculture and water resource management in five villages of Aurepalle watershed in the semiarid tropics of Southern India, as part of a much larger ICRISAT study of composite water management.

Though the external image of the tropical drylands is one of perennial crisis and suffering. Hot semi-arid climates (type "BSh") tend to be located in the 20s and 30s latitudes of the (tropics and subtropics), typically in proximity to regions with a tropical savanna or a humid subtropical climates tend to have hot, sometimes extremely hot, summers and warm to cool winters, with some to minimal precipitation.

Such information for Alfisols and Vertisols, the two major soils in the semi-arid tropics (SATs), is scanty especially from a long-term perspective.

In this paper, we describe and discuss results from long-term. Cold semi-arid regions have a relatively cold winter, which may some snowfall. The cold semi-arid climate is located at a higher elevation than the hot semi-arid climates. The cold semi-arid climates are also likely to experience temperature variations between day and night.

The temperature variation is not common in the hot semi-arid : John Misachi. The wide belt of land and water that lies between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn is home to half of the world's people and some of its most diverse and productive ecosystems.

Citizens and governments within and beyond the tropics are increasingly aware of. Four bullock-drawn tillage implements (mouldboard plough, chisel plough, sweeps, and shovels) were evaluated on a hard-setting Alfisol.

Measurements included draft requirement, bulk density, cone index, soil crust strength, water content of the plough-layer and crop yield. Changes in bulk density and cone index due to tillage decreased with time and were negligible by the end of Cited by: 7.

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), has a mission to “reduce poverty, hunger, malnutrition and environmental degradation in the dryland tropics.” The institute’s research in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa is focused on resilient dryland systems, grain Author: Sarah Dewitt.

These areas receive relatively low overall amounts of precipitation in the form of rainfall or snow (UN, ; MEA ). Two organizations, the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, headquartered in Syria and India, respectively, are working to develop low-cost water conservation and other technologies to raise the productivity of parched farmlands.

Introduction Alfisols of semi-arid tropical regions of the world have been degraded in terms of soil quality primarily due to loss of topsoil by wind and water erosion, depletion of organic carbon, and losses of nutrients (ICRISAT ).

Knowledge on agroclimatology of a region is a valuable tool in crop planning. Agroclimatic analysis of the APRLP nucleus watersheds in three target districts (Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar and Kurnool) has been carried out on the basis of agromet data for the period – "Arid and Semi-Arid Environments" focuses upon major themes in the study of desert landscapes, processes and landforms.

The book considers the physical causes of aridity, the desert hydrological cycle and the problems of water supply. Particular attention is paid to desert ecosystems and how they are related to aridity.4/5(1). Semi-arid soil (2nd of 2) Next.

Most Semi-arid soils are free-draining but receive insufficient rainfall to remove soluble salts. These may build up in the subsoil as white deposits unless flushed out by irrigation water.

Such soils are chemically fertile, although only moist enough for plant growth for a short time each year. SAT - Semi-Arid Tropics. Looking for abbreviations of SAT. It is Semi-Arid Tropics.

The Coromandel plains region lies squarely in the large agro-climatic zone of the semi arid tropics which constitutes about 42 per cent of India's area, and accounts for the same proportion of its production of foodgrains.
